Mañanita An ex-military sniper who was honorably discharged accepts a mission that will indefinitely change her life in the attempts to make ends meet. It is a quiet character study of when your life’s purpose is stripped away, but you still pursue it, only to realise that it could kill you. Starring Bela Padilla, the film took Paul three years to produce under his own company (TEN17P) and Viva Films, and he tells why in an exclusive interview with The STAR. It will be shown at the TIFF on Oct. 29, with additional screenings on Oct. 31 and Nov. 5, and will open in Philippine cinemas on Dec. 4.

Mañanita Produced under Ten17P and VIVA Films and penned by award-winning filmmaker Lav Diaz, “Mañanita” is among the eight Filipino films featured in the Festival. The drama-suspense film was given a Graded A by the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB). Bela Padilla, together with director Paul Soriano, graced the red carpet at the prestigious 32nd Tokyo International Film Festival to represent “Mañanita” last October 28, 2019. An ex-military sniper who was honorably discharged accepts a mission that will indefinitely change her life in the attempts to make ends meet. It is a quiet character study of when your life’s purpose is stripped away, but you still pursue it, only to realise that it could kill you. It is rare for a Filipino film to express its story through gaps and silences. But Mañanita is able to accomplish this through a narrative told mainly by a silent camera, rather than talkative dialogues. Fissured, the actions of the individuals in the film matter as they make us wait for a resolution or a closure that never comes.

Mañanita Songs from Asin, Joey Ayala, and Freddie Aguilar are among those used in the film. They all play a big role in the movie. “The lyrics are actually, will hope gets you as I mentioned before, the film is actually a serenade to you guys and to the audience,” said Paul. The film Mañanita is directed by Paul Soriano from a screenplay written by award winning filmmaker and Cotabato’s own Lav Diaz. The film stars Bela Padilla, Joel Saracho, and Ronnie Lazaro. It is produced by TEN17P Productions and Viva Films and is slated for a wide release in Philippine Cinemas on December 4, 2019. Here is the movie trailer.
